A BILL FOR AN ACT ENTITLED: "AN ACT REQUIRING THE PAYMENT OF A STIPEND OF $500 TO A TEACHER WHO SUPERVISES A STUDENT TEACHER; PROVIDING AN APPROPRIATION; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE."



     WHEREAS, the Montana University System's success in preparing teachers for the state's elementary and secondary schools depends, in part, upon the assistance of the individual teachers who supervise student teachers; and

     WHEREAS, these supervising teachers devote countless hours to sharing their knowledge and expertise with student teachers; and

     WHEREAS, these supervising teachers deserve compensation commensurate with the time they spend in mentoring student teachers.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MONTANA:



     NEW SECTION.  Section 1.  Stipend for supervising teachers. A certified teacher who agrees to supervise a student teacher from a teacher preparation program within the Montana university system must be paid a stipend of $500. If the appropriation for funding stipends for supervising teachers is less than the total amount for which supervising teachers qualify, the board of regents shall prorate the appropriation to the supervising teachers in a manner that provides the same amount to each supervising teacher.



     NEW SECTION.  Section 2. Appropriation.  There is appropriated $700,000 from the general fund to the board of regents for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2001, to pay each supervising teacher of a student teacher a stipend of $500.



     NEW SECTION.  Section 3.  Codification instruction. [Section 1] is intended to be codified as an integral part of Title 20, chapter 25, part 4, and the provisions of Title 20, chapter 25, part 4, apply to [section 1].



     NEW SECTION.  Section 4.  Effective date. [This act] is effective July 1, 2001.
