A BILL FOR AN ACT ENTITLED: "AN ACT REQUIRING A SCHOOL DISTRICT TO GRANT CREDIT TO A STUDENT WHO COMPLETES A POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION COURSE; ALLOWING THE STUDENT TO SUBSTITUTE THE COURSE FOR A SIMILAR HIGH SCHOOL COURSE; COUNTING THE COURSE TOWARD GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS; AND COUNTING A STUDENT WHO TAKES POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION COURSES AS A FULL-TIME PUPIL FOR ANB PURPOSES."

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MONTANA:

 

     NEW SECTION.  Section 1.  Postsecondary education courses -- authorizing substitution for high school course -- applying course toward graduation requirements -- calculating ANB. (1) (a) The trustees of a district shall grant credit to a regularly enrolled high school student who successfully completes a course offered by a postsecondary institution accredited by a regional accrediting agency approved by the United States department of education pursuant to 20 U.S.C. 1099b. The course may be offered on campus, by correspondence, or through distance learning technology. A student may substitute a postsecondary course for a similar or more advanced high school course. If appropriate, the course must be applied toward the units required for graduation.

     (b) A student who takes one or more courses under the provisions of this section must be considered as a regularly enrolled full-time pupil for the purpose of calculating ANB under the provisions of 20-9-311.

     (2) The trustees shall ensure that all high school students in 11th and 12th grades in the district are informed of the provisions of this section.

     (3) The trustees are not obligated to pay for a postsecondary course taken by a student.

 

     NEW SECTION.  Section 2.  Codification instruction. [Section 1] is intended to be codified as an integral part of Title 20, chapter 7, part 1, and the provisions of Title 20, chapter 7, part 1, apply to [section 1].
