A BILL FOR AN ACT ENTITLED: "AN ACT ESTABLISHING SEPTEMBER 11 AS HOMETOWN HEROES' DAY, A LEGAL HOLIDAY IN THE STATE OF MONTANA, REPLACING COLUMBUS DAY AS A LEGAL HOLIDAY; AND AMENDING SECTION 1-1-216, MCA; AND PROVIDING A DELAYED EFFECTIVE DATE."

 

     WHEREAS, every day at every hour, there are men and women standing ready to respond to emergencies and protect our lives, homes, and communities throughout the state; and

     WHEREAS, police officers, deputy sheriffs, highway patrol officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, and national guard members stand prepared to aid the citizens of Montana; and

     WHEREAS, it is fitting that once each year, Montana's citizens formally honor our hometown heroes who commit their talents, time, and effort to preserve and enhance public safety; and

     WHEREAS, these hometown heroes sometimes sacrifice life and limb to protect our well being and to make each of the communities of our state a safe and secure place in which to raise our children and grandchildren; and

     WHEREAS, there is ample reason to designate September 11 each year as Hometown Heroes' Day, the appropriate day to recognize, remember, and show our gratitude by honoring our hometown heroes.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MONTANA:

 

     Section 1.  Section 1-1-216, MCA, is amended to read:

     "1-1-216.  Legal holidays and business days. (1) The following are legal holidays in the state of Montana:

     (a)  Each each Sunday;

     (b)  New Year's Day, January 1;

     (c)  Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the third Monday in January;

     (d)  Lincoln's and Washington's Birthdays birthdays, the third Monday in February;

     (e)  Memorial Day, the last Monday in May;

     (f)  Independence Day, July 4;

     (g)  Labor Day, the first Monday in September;

     (h)  Columbus Day, the second Monday in October Hometown Heroes' Day, September 11;

     (i)  Veterans' Day, November 11;

     (j)  Thanksgiving Day, the fourth Thursday in November;

     (k)  Christmas Day, December 25;

     (l)  State state general election day.

     (2)  If any of the above-enumerated holidays (except Sunday) fall upon a Sunday, the Monday following is a holiday. All other days are business days."

 

     NEW SECTION.  SECTION 2.  EFFECTIVE DATE. [THIS ACT] IS EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2008.
