A BILL FOR AN ACT ENTITLED: "AN ACT REQUIRING THAT CERTAIN PEACE OFFICERS RECEIVE ANNUAL TRAINING ON LANDLORD AND TENANT LAW; ALLOWING THE MONTANA LAW ENFORCEMENT ACADEMY TO ASSIST LOCAL GOVERNMENTS IN DESIGNING AND IMPLEMENTING THE TRAINING; PROVIDING AN APPROPRIATION; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE."

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MONTANA:

 

     NEW SECTION.  Section 1.  Continuing training requirement. A deputy sheriff, undersheriff, or police officer must receive 3 hours of annual training on landlord and tenant law.

 

     NEW SECTION.  Section 2.  Continuing education assistance to local governments -- landlord tenant law. To assist local governments in fulfilling the requirements provided by [section 1], the Montana law enforcement academy may conduct professional development training, develop training materials, or assist local governments that are developing training materials or conducting training for officers who are required to participate in annual landlord and tenant law training.

 

     NEW SECTION.  Section 3.  Appropriation. There is appropriated $49,900 from the general fund to the department of justice for the biennium beginning July 1, 2017, for the purpose of financing the cost of training pursuant to [section 1], including reimbursements to municipalities and counties conducting or attending training pursuant to [section 1] and developing the training and associated materials.

 

     NEW SECTION.  Section 4.  Codification instruction. (1) [Section 1] is intended to be codified as an integral part of Title 7, chapter 32, part 3, and the provisions of Title 7, chapter 32, part 3, apply to [section 1].

     (2) [Section 2] is intended to be codified as an integral part of Title 44, chapter 10, and the provisions of Title 44, chapter 10, apply to [section 2].

 

     NEW SECTION.  Section 5.  Effective date. [This act] is effective July 1, 2017.
