AN ACT DESIGNATING THE MISSOULA MEMORIAL ROSE GARDEN AS A STATE VETERANS' MEMORIAL ROSE GARDEN AND AS A STATE KOREAN CONFLICT VETERANS' MEMORIAL; AND PROVIDING FOR REFERENCES ON STATE MAPS.



     WHEREAS, a memorial rose garden was officially established on November 12, 1944, in Missoula, Montana; and

     WHEREAS, on that date, six Missoula members of the American Rose Society suggested the garden as a means of honoring the memory of American service members killed in World War II; and

     WHEREAS, in 1946, the first rose bushes were planted in the garden; and

     WHEREAS, in 1968, the garden's name was changed from Sunset Memorial Rose Garden to Missoula Memorial Rose Garden because of confusion with the Sunset Memorial Garden Cemetery; and

     WHEREAS, the Missoula Memorial Rose Garden borders a Blue Star Memorial Highway commemorating American veterans who served during World War II; and

     WHEREAS, the Missoula Memorial Rose Garden has since served as the site for memorials commemorating the American combatants of Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, and the Persian Gulf; and

     WHEREAS, the Missoula Memorial Rose Garden has become a living tribute to the veterans and casualties of America's 20th century conflicts.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MONTANA:



     Section 1.  State veterans' memorial rose garden. (1) The Missoula memorial rose garden, located in Missoula, Montana, is officially designated as a state veterans' memorial rose garden.

     (2)  In addition to the reference required under 1-1-512, the department of commerce and the department of transportation shall identify the Missoula memorial rose garden on official state maps as a state veterans' memorial rose garden.



     Section 2.  State Korean conflict veterans' memorial -- Missoula. (1) The Missoula memorial rose garden, located in Missoula, Montana, is officially designated as a state Korean conflict veterans' memorial.

     (2)  The department of commerce and the department of transportation shall identify the Missoula memorial rose garden on official state maps as a state Korean conflict veterans' memorial.



     Section 3.  Codification instruction. [Sections 1 and 2] are intended to be codified as an integral part of Title 1, chapter 1, part 5, and the provisions of Title 1, chapter 1, part 5, apply to [sections 1 and 2].
