Thirty Montana legislators served their final term in their current offices in 2009 and cannot return to the same seat in 2011 because of term limits, which prohibit certain public officials from seeking re-election if they have already held the office for 8 years in any 16-year period.
These legislators will continue to serve during the interim between the 2009 and 2011 sessions and in any special sessions called during that period. Some may also be able to run for election to the other legislative chamber in 2010.
