Session Law Citation: Chapter 469, Laws of 1997

In addition to providingfor numerous long-range buildingprojects, House Bill 5(1997) made possiblethe state's purchaseand administration ofVirginia and NevadaCities and otherhistorically significantstate properties. To this end, House Bill 5 establishedthe Heritage Preservation and Development Commission. The Commission is composed of one Senator, onemember of the House of Representatives, and sevenmembers of the public with backgrounds in tourism, history and historic preservation, community planning, and business. Directors of the Department of Fish,Wildlife, and Parks and the Historical Society, as well asthe Governor's Economic Development Policy Advisor, also serve on the Commission.

Although the Commission is charged with overseeingthe acquisition of culturally and historically significantproperties throughout the state, its first order ofbusiness is to manage the administration of Virginia Cityand Nevada City.
