A legislative committee will debate possible solutions to water-policy issues at a meeting June 10-11 in Helena.
The Water Policy Interim Committee will meet June 10 at 9 a.m. in Room 152 of the State Capitol. It will reconvene June 11 in the same room at 8 a.m. The 2007 Legislature created the committee to study a wide range of water issues.
The committee plans to review a draft report summarizing its work since the 2007 session. Members also will consider possible recommendations on such topics as a statewide groundwater study, water supply and sewage disposal, and water rights enforcement.
The committee also will hear presentations on irrigation policy, water supplies to new subdivisions, and the implications of a recent court decision that required the state Department of Natural Resources and Conservation to issue a permit because the agency's review process took longer than is allowed by law.
An agenda and other meeting information are available at: www.leg.mt.gov/water.
Sen. Jim Elliott, D-Trout Creek, chairs the committee. Other members are Sens. Larry Jent, D-Bozeman; Terry Murphy, R-Cardwell; and Gary Perry, R-Manhattan; and Reps. Scott Boggio, R-Red Lodge; Jill Cohenour, D-East Helena; Bill McChesney, D-Miles City; and Walter McNutt, R-Sidney.
