HOUSE BILL NO. 627

A BILL FOR AN ACT ENTITLED: "AN ACT APPROPRIATING FUNDS TO THE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS TO ESTABLISH A PRERELEASE CENTER ON A MONTANA INDIAN RESERVATION; AND PROVIDING EFFECTIVE DATES."



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MONTANA:



     NEW SECTION.  Section 1.  Appropriation. (1) There is appropriated $1 million $5,000 from the general fund to the department of corrections for the biennium ending June 30, 2003.

     (2) The appropriation must be used to establish STUDY THE FEASIBILITY OF ESTABLISHING, pursuant to 53-1-203, a prerelease center on a Montana Indian reservation to serve the needs of American Indian inmates and to facilitate their return to productive and law-abiding citizenship. THE STUDY RESULTS MUST BE PRESENTED TO THE 58TH LEGISLATURE.



     NEW SECTION.  Section 2.  Notification to tribal governments. The secretary of state shall send a copy of [this act] to each tribal government located on the seven Montana reservations and to the Little Shell band of Chippewa.



     NEW SECTION.  Section 3.  Effective dates. (1) [Section 2 and this section] are effective on passage and approval.

     (2) [Section 1] is effective July 1, 2001.
