A JOINT RESOLUTION OF THE SENATE AND THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MONTANA URGING THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR TO GRANT FINAL RECOGNITION TO THE LITTLE SHELL TRIBE OF CHIPPEWA INDIANS OF MONTANA.



     WHEREAS, the Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians of Montana has been waiting for over 100 years to become a federally recognized Indian tribe; and

     WHEREAS, on Friday, May 26, 2000, the Little Shell Tribe received notice that the Department of the Interior had issued a ruling, qualifying the Tribe for federal recognition; and

     WHEREAS, federal recognition will bring long-awaited benefits and services to the Little Shell people, including health care, child welfare services, and their own court system; and

     WHEREAS, the Little Shell Tribe now waits for word from the Secretary of the Interior that its long-awaited dream of recognition has become a reality.



NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE AND THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MONTANA:

     That the Montana Legislature urge the United States Department of the Interior to recognize the Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians so that tribal members may begin to partake of the services available to all federally recognized Indian tribes.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Secretary of State send copies of this resolution to:

     (1)  the members of the Montana Congressional Delegation;

     (2)  the Secretary of the Department of the Interior;

     (3)  each tribal government located on the seven Montana reservations; and

     (4)  the Little Shell Tribal Council.
