BY REQUEST OF THE SENATE LEGISLATIVE ADMINISTRATION STANDING COMMITTEE



A BILL FOR AN ACT ENTITLED: "AN ACT GENERALLY REVISING PROVISIONS RELATING TO THE LEGISLATIVE INTERN PROGRAM; PROVIDING A DAILY ALLOWANCE FOR INTERNS; REVISING INTERN QUALIFICATIONS; AMENDING SECTION 5-06-106, MCA; AND REPEALING SECTION 5-6-111, MCA."



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MONTANA:



     NEW SECTION.  Section 1.  Daily allowance. (1) The legislative council shall pay a daily allowance of $50 to no more than one legislative intern from each postsecondary institution that submits one or more applications under 5-6-104.

     (2) The daily allowance must be paid in the same manner as the daily allowance is paid to legislators under 5-2-301.



     Section 2.  Section 5-6-106, MCA, is amended to read:

     "5-6-106.  Intern qualifications. (1) The legislative interns must have the following qualifications:

     (a)  at least one course of "government" or its equivalent as a course of study at an a postsecondary institution of higher learning;

     (b)  attainment of at least the level of a junior sophomore at a 4-year institution of higher learning or attainment of at least the level of a sophomore at a 2-year postsecondary institution; and

     (c)  the necessary degree of scholastic achievement, leadership, and involvement in community affairs.

     (2)  Preference must be given to Montana high school graduates."



     NEW SECTION.  Section 3.  Repealer. Section 5-6-111, MCA, is repealed.



     NEW SECTION.  Section 4.  Codification instruction. [Section 1] is intended to be codified as an integral part of Title 5, chapter 6, part 1, and the provisions of Title 5, chapter 6, part 1, apply to [section 1].
