A JOINT RESOLUTION OF THE SENATE AND THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MONTANA AUTHORIZING THE PERMANENT PLACEMENT OF CERTAIN BUSTS, STATUES, MEMORIALS, MONUMENTS, AND ART DISPLAYS IN THE CAPITOL.



     WHEREAS, section 2-17-804(1)(b), MCA, requires the Capitol Complex Advisory Council to advise the Legislature on the placement of busts, statues, memorials, monuments, or art displays of a permanent nature within public areas of the Capitol Complex; and

     WHEREAS, the Capitol Complex Advisory Council recognizes that recent renovation, repair, and restoration have resulted in changes to the configuration and nature of the Capitol that require a thorough assessment of the placement or replacement of items within the building; and

     WHEREAS, the Capitol Complex Advisory Council advises that the items listed in this resolution be permanently placed or retained in the locations indicated; and

     WHEREAS, the Capitol Complex Advisory Council further advises that other items that have been removed over the years because of building modifications be entrusted to the Montana Historical Society for storage, temporary display, or recommendation for permanent placement at a future date in the Capitol or other state buildings.



NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE AND THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MONTANA:

     (1) That the following busts, statues, memorials, monuments, and art displays be retained as permanent placements in their current locations within the Capitol or on the Capitol Complex grounds:

     (a) the busts of Thomas J. Walsh, Burton K. Wheeler, and Joseph Dixon;

     (b) the memorial to First Montana Volunteers (Spanish-American War);

     (c) the plaque of Theodore Brantley;

     (d) the murals by Edgar S. Paxson, Ralph E. DeCamp, Charles M. Russell, Amedee Joullin, and F. Pedretti and Sons;

     (e) the portraits of Joseph K. Toole and Wilbur Fiske Sanders;

     (f) the statue of Jeanette Rankin;

     (g) the statue by Bob Scriver entitled "Symbol of the Pros"; and

     (h)  the statue of General Thomas Francis Meagher.

     (2) That the Gallery of Outstanding Montanans, nine individual, rotating displays, be permanently placed in the third floor hallways of the Capitol.

     (3) That the Montana Statehood Centennial Bell be permanently placed in the eastside niche on the third floor of the Capitol.

     (4)  That the plaque commemorating Montana's centennial be permanently placed in the Capitol in a location to be determined by the Department of Administration upon consultation with the Capitol Complex Advisory Council.

     (5)  That the plaque commemorating Montana's women legislators be permanently placed in the Capitol in a location to be determined by the Department of Administration upon consultation with the Capitol Complex Advisory Council.

     (6) That, upon completion, the commissioned statue of Mike and Maureen Mansfield be permanently placed in the southside niche on the third floor of the Capitol.

     (7) That all busts, statues, memorials, monuments, and art displays not identified in this resolution that may have been associated with the Capitol be entrusted to the Montana Historical Society for storage or temporary display until a suitable location is identified and approved by the Legislature for permanent placement.
