HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 12

A JOINT RESOLUTION OF THE SENATE AND THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MONTANA URGING THE PARKS DIVISION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF FISH, WILDLIFE, AND PARKS TO SET ASIDE STATE-OWNED PROPERTY AT THE MILLTOWN DAM RECLAMATION SITE AS A STATE PARK AND INTERPRETIVE CENTER FOLLOWING COMPLETION OF THE MILLTOWN DAM RECLAMATION AND RIVER RESTORATION PROJECT.
WHEREAS, the site of present Milltown Dam, east of Missoula at the confluence of the Clark Fork River and the Blackfoot River, is a mining reclamation site presently being reclaimed to remove over 100 years of mining waste and environmental damage, with the eventual purpose of removing Milltown Dam and restoring that portion of the Clark Fork River as a free-flowing river; and
WHEREAS, the Milltown Dam reclamation site will one day be an example of successful Montana mining reclamation and river restoration, and the site will be a safe and desirable destination for recreational use by the public, with important historical, ecological, geological, and social significance that would be enhanced by an interpretive center explaining that significance; and
WHEREAS, it is desirable that, upon completion of the Milltown Dam reclamation and river restoration project, the state of Montana designate the Milltown Dam site as a state park and interpretive center for the enjoyment and edification of the people of Montana and the recreating and traveling public.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE AND THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MONTANA:
That the Parks Division of the Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks be urged to set aside and designate state-owned property at the Milltown Dam site as a state park and interpretive center, upon completion of the Milltown Dam reclamation and river restoration project, for the enjoyment and edification of the people of Montana and the recreating and traveling public.
