HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 13

A JOINT RESOLUTION OF THE SENATE AND THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MONTANA REQUESTING THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR AND THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE REQUIRE THAT NATIONAL PARK CONCESSIONAIRES PROVIDE HIRING PREFERENCES FOR LOCAL WORKERS.

 

     WHEREAS, thousands of seasonal workers are hired each year to work for concessionaires in Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks; and

     WHEREAS, these concessionaires often seek out college-age adults from outside Montana and the United States; and

     WHEREAS, unemployment in Glacier County is about 9%, Flathead County is about 6%, and Lincoln County is about 10%; and

     WHEREAS, counties surrounding the national parks, tribal colleges, and the university system have many educated and employable workers.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE AND THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MONTANA:

     That the Department of the Interior and the National Park Service are urged to require that concessionaires in national parks provide hiring preferences for local workers.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Secretary of State send a copy of this resolution to the Secretary of the Interior, the director of the National Park Service, each of the tribal colleges and units of the Montana University System, and to each member of the Montana Congressional Delegation.
