HOUSE BILL NO. 466

A BILL FOR AN ACT ENTITLED: "AN ACT APPROPRIATING FUNDS TO THE MONTANA DIGITAL ACADEMY FOR AN INDIAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE MIDDLE SCHOOL SAMPLER COURSE; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE."

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MONTANA:

 

     NEW SECTION.  Section 1.  Appropriation. For the biennium beginning July 1, 2019, there is appropriated $25,000 from the general fund to the Montana digital academy, established in 20-7-1201, for the purposes of developing and implementing an Indian language and culture middle school sampler course for one of the languages of the tribes in Montana. As appropriate, the Montana digital academy shall utilize existing curriculum and cultural resources for the selected language and tribe that are available through the Montana Indian language preservation program, the tribal college located on the reservation of the tribe, any language immersion class taught on the reservation of the tribe, and educators who speak that language and are certified as class 7 Native American language and culture teachers through the office of public instruction.

 

     NEW SECTION.  Section 2.  Notification to tribal governments. The secretary of state shall send a copy of [this act] to each tribal government located on the seven Montana reservations and to the Little Shell Chippewa tribe.

 

     NEW SECTION.  Section 3.  Effective date. [This act] is effective July 1, 2019.
