A BILL FOR AN ACT ENTITLED: "AN ACT ESTABLISHING THE TRIBAL LAW ENFORCEMENT MEMORIAL HIGHWAY IN LAKE COUNTY; DIRECTING THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO INSTALL SIGNS AT THE LOCATION AND TO INCLUDE THE MEMORIAL HIGHWAY ON THE NEXT PUBLICATION OF THE STATE HIGHWAY MAP; AND PROVIDING AN IMMEDIATE EFFECTIVE DATE."

 

     WHEREAS, Louis "Louie" Caye Sr. was born on July 4, 1924, to Francois Mayuk Caye and Lucy Auld, was loved and trusted by his community and tribes as a leader and a friend, worked as a wagon driller on dams throughout Montana in the 1940s, became one of the first police officers for the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes while providing duties as a game warden, lived to serve to protect his reservation, and served as a tribal law enforcement officer for 26 years from 1963 to 1989; and

     WHEREAS, Policeman Alec Couture served with the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes as a tribal police officer for 12 years, was well respected by his community and tribes for his commitment to keeping the reservation safe, and will be remembered by his friends and family for all his efforts to provide a bright future for generations to come; and

     WHEREAS, the 66th Legislature of the State of Montana honors Louis Caye Sr. and Alec Couture.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MONTANA:

 

     NEW SECTION.  Section 1.  Tribal Law Enforcement memorial highway. (1) There is established the tribal law enforcement memorial highway on the existing U.S. highway 93 between Big Arm and Dayton.

     (2) The department shall design and install appropriate signs marking the location of the tribal law enforcement memorial highway. Signs designating the memorial highway between Big Arm and Elmo must include the name of Louie Caye Sr. and signs designating the memorial highway between Elmo and Dayton must include the name of Alex Couture.

     (3) Maps that identify roadways in Montana must be updated to include the location of the tribal law enforcement memorial highway when the department updates and publishes the state maps.

 

     NEW SECTION.  Section 2.  Codification instruction. [Section 1] is intended to be codified as an integral part of Title 60, chapter 1, part 2, and the provisions of Title 60, chapter 1, part 2, apply to [section 1].

 

     NEW SECTION.  Section 3.  Effective date. [This act] is effective on passage and approval.
