INTRODUCED BY M. MACDONALD

A JOINT RESOLUTION OF THE SENATE AND THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MONTANA URGING CONGRESS TO REINSTATE A FEDERAL MANDATORY COUNTRY-OF-ORIGIN LABELING LAW FOR BEEF AND PORK IN THE UNITED STATES-MEXICO-CANADA AGREEMENT.

WHEREAS, the United States Department of Agriculture "Product of USA" labeling loophole allows imported beef and pork that is only processed or packaged in the United States to be labeled "Product of USA"; and

WHEREAS, the Food Safety and Inspection Service of the United States Department of Agriculture is tasked with "ensuring that all labels are truthful and not misleading"; and

WHEREAS, consumers have a right to know where their food is from; and

WHEREAS, United States farmers and ranchers deserve an honest label for their products; and

WHEREAS, agriculture is Montana's largest industry and an essential part of Montana's economy; and

WHEREAS, beef and pork are the only products excluded from country-of-origin labeling; and

WHEREAS, consumers and producers across Montana are calling for a mandatory country-of-origin labeling law to ensure the truthful labeling of where beef and pork are born, raised, and processed.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE AND THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MONTANA:

That the Senate and the House of Representatives of the 66th Legislature of the State of Montana urge Congress to reinstate a federal mandatory country-of-origin labeling law for beef and pork in the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, including the following language:
