A BILL FOR AN ACT ENTITLED: "AN ACT establishing the judge pedro r. hernandez memorial highway in yellowstone county; directing the department of transportation to install signs at the location and to include the memorial highway on the next publication of the state highway map; and PROVIDING AN IMMEDIATE EFFECTIVE DATE."
WHEREAS, Judge Pedro R. Hernandez lived in and served Yellowstone County; and
WHEREAS, Judge Pedro R. Hernandez dedicated his life to serving the residents of Yellowstone County while working in the Billings Police Department and the Juvenile Probation Office; and
WHEREAS, as Justice of the Peace in Yellowstone County, Judge Pedro R. Hernandez served for a record-setting 42 years; and
WHEREAS, Judge Pedro R. Hernandez served with humility and honor and showed compassion and respect both from the bench and in the community; and
WHEREAS, Judge Pedro R. Hernandez touched the hearts and lives of the countless couples he united in marriage, and often performed the weddings of multiple generations within families; and
WHEREAS, Judge Pedro R. Hernandez retired from the bench on November 30, 2017; and
WHEREAS, Judge Pedro R. Hernandez passed away after a lifetime of service to Yellowstone County on November 22, 2020; and
WHEREAS, the 67th Legislature of the State of Montana honors the life and service of Judge Pedro R. Hernandez.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MONTANA:
NEW SECTION. Section 1. Judge Pedro R. Hernandez memorial highway. (1) There is established the Judge Pedro R. Hernandez memorial highway on the existing U.S. Highway 3 from the roundabout at the top of 27th Street in Billings south to Interstate 90.
(2) The department shall design and install appropriate signs marking the location of the Judge Pedro R. Hernandez memorial highway, stating his name, title, and the date of his passing.
(3) Maps that identify roadways in the state must be updated to include the location of the Judge Pedro R. Hernandez memorial highway when the department updates and publishes the state maps.
NEW SECTION. Section 2. Codification instruction. [Section 1] is intended to be codified as an integral part of Title 60, chapter 1, part 2, and the provisions of Title 60, chapter 1, part 2, apply to [section 1].
NEW SECTION. Section 3. Effective date. [This act] is effective on passage and approval.
