A BILL FOR AN ACT ENTITLED: "AN ACT REQUIRING SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO OFFER MONTANA HISTORY AND REQUIRING STUDENTS TO TAKE MONTANA HISTORY; SUPERSEDING THE UNFUNDED MANDATE LAWS; AND PROVIDING AN APPLICABILITY DATE."



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MONTANA:



     NEW SECTION.  Section 1.  Montana history required. (1) Each school district shall offer as part of its basic instructional program a course in Montana history in grades 7 through 12.

     (2) Each student in grades 7 through 12 in a public school is required to take at least one course in Montana history.



     NEW SECTION.  Section 2.  Unfunded mandate law superseded. The provisions of [this act] expressly supersede and modify the requirements of 1-2-112 through 1-2-116.



     NEW SECTION.  Section 3.  Codification instruction. [Section 1] is intended to be codified as an integral part of Title 20, chapter 7, part 1, and the provisions of Title 20, chapter 7, part 1, apply to [section 1].



     NEW SECTION.  Section 4.  Applicability. [This act] applies to the school fiscal year beginning on July 1, 2000.
