A JOINT RESOLUTION OF THE SENATE AND THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MONTANA ENCOURAGING SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO IMPLEMENT INTERGENERATIONAL SCHOOL VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS.



     WHEREAS, it is important for a community to provide support to parents and teachers in fulfilling their responsibilities for the nurturing and education of children; and

     WHEREAS, promoting activities between community members and school-age youth enriches the lives of both groups; and

     WHEREAS, there are many members of a community, both young and old, who are willing and able to work with school children both in school and nonschool settings.



NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE AND THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MONTANA:

     (1) That school district trustees be encouraged to develop and implement an intergenerational school volunteer program for members of the community and for school children from kindergarten through grade 12.

     (2) That the volunteer program enhance the academic, problem-solving, interpersonal, and citizenship skills of school children by using volunteers from the community who possess those skills and abilities that would benefit school children.

     (3) That the volunteer program include activities for volunteers aimed at enriching the lives of school children and school activities aimed at enriching the lives of volunteers.

     (4) That school district trustees be encouraged to work with community organizations in developing the program and recruiting the volunteers.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Secretary of State send copies of this resolution to the Superintendent of Public Instruction, the Board of Public Education, and the Montana School Boards Association for dissemination to school districts.
