A JOINT RESOLUTION OF THE SENATE AND THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MONTANA EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR RETAINING THE HISTORIC NAME OF POMPEYS PILLAR AND RESISTING A REQUEST TO CHANGE IT.
WHEREAS, a New York resident has petitioned the United States Board on Geographic Names for the purpose of historical accuracy to change the name of many natural creeks, rivers, falls, and the Pompeys Pillar National Historic Landmark; and
WHEREAS, the request is to change the name of Pompeys Pillar to Pompey Tower, the name first used in Captain William Clark's journal; and
WHEREAS, the name was changed in the very first publishing of the journal by an editor who was the only person to have interviewed Captain Meriwether Lewis and Captain Clark; and
WHEREAS, both Captain Lewis and Captain Clark tended to use multiple spellings for the same words throughout their journals; and
WHEREAS, reflecting these proposed name changes on signs, maps, books, and other printed material would be very expensive; and
WHEREAS, changes of this kind would only serve to create more confusion for future historians; and
WHEREAS, almost 1,000 signatures of individuals opposed to the proposed changes were obtained by residents of Montana and the Pompeys Pillar Community in a matter of only 2 weeks.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE AND THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MONTANA:
That the members of the 56th Legislature request that the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation convey these arguments to the United States Board on Geographic Names and ask that the New York resident's petition for historical changes be denied and that the current names be retained.
