Many things Montanans do or may want to do are regulated by state government. Sometimes knowing who is in charge of what can be confusing. Even what might seem like a simple project could mean contacting multiple agencies.

But there is a place to learn everything from what one needs to keep bees or to build a utility line.

The latest version of the Montana Index of Environmental Permits is available online, by chapter or the full report. Chapters include agriculture, land use, mining, parks and recreation, subdivisions, and water. The index is intended to be one stop shop to save time and effort.

This is the 21st edition of the Index published by the Environmental Quality Council to provide information on any state permit or license needed to conduct activities that may affect the environment. Originally published in 1976, the index is updated every two years by EQC staff to reflect changes in Montana statute and administrative rules.
