The Law and Justice Interim Committee (LJIC) will meet at 8 a.m. on July 16 in Room 102 of the Capitol in Helena.

During the meeting, the LJIC will cover a range of topics, including considering drafts of three potential committee bills requested during its previous meeting. None of the three drafts have been formally requested by the committee to be introduced in the 2019 session. Instead, the committee members will take public comments about the draft language and may request changes be made to the drafts for the committee’s consideration at its final meeting in September.

The drafts include:

  • LCj01, which would clarify that the LJIC is the interim committee that has oversight over the Office of State Public Defender;
  • LCj02, which would revise the appointment process used to select members of the state Board of Pardons and Parole; and
  • LCj03, which would define terms and create policies related to when and how a state prison can use restricted housing for inmates. This draft is part of the LJIC’s SJ 25 study of solitary confinement.

The LJIC will also hear updates for each of the Executive Branch agencies under its oversight, as well as an update from the Supreme Court Administrator.

In addition, members of local DUI task forces will present results from a recent survey of those organizations.
Please note that if the 65th Legislature calls a special session for July 16, the LJIC meeting will be cancelled. The deadline for legislators to return ballots is July 15.

The meeting will be streamed live at the Montana Legislature's website and will be broadcast on Television Montana (TVMT). Please check your local channel listings to find TVMT in your area.
