The Children, Families, Health, and Human Services Interim Committee will meet on Aug. 6 to take public comment on the potential use of funds that will be restored to the state's human services agency in this fiscal year.

Senate Bill 9 in the November 2017 special session allowed for up to $30.5 million to be restored to the budget for the Department of Public Health and Human Services if revenues for the recently completed fiscal year exceeded a specified level. Revenues have exceeded the target level.

The money will replace funding that was cut by the governor last year under his statutory authority to reduce general fund spending when a budget shortfall is expected.

The committee's meeting is designed to allow interested parties an opportunity to suggest how the additional funds should be used. The committee itself is unable to require that the money be used in a particular way; the executive branch has the authority to spend any additional funding as it believes is appropriate.

The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. in Room 152 of the Capitol in Helena.

People interested in commenting at the meeting should contact Sue O'Connell, committee staff, at soconnell@mt.gov to indicate which areas of the DPHHS budget they plan to address.
