The Legislative Council met in Butte on May 23 and 24, 2018.  The council adopted a revised Legislator Training Schedule to include training on January 3 and 4, the week before session begins. Session will begin on Monday, January 7, 2019.  The council also adopted a tentative 2019 Legislative Session Calendar.  Both the session calendar and the training schedule are linked on the council website under Announcements.

The council adopted the Subcommittee on Legislator Compensation recommendations on a third-party method of setting compensation, and directed staff to analyze recommended changes to the constituent services account and bring back a bill draft for the next meeting.  The council consulted on a proposal from the Department of Military Affairs for the sale of Sidney Armory to Richland County.  That proposal will now go before the Land Board.  The Council discussed the Harassment Policy for Legislators and made some suggested changes.  Staff will be finalizing the section on records and confidentiality for the subcommittee to review and then forward that policy to the full council for consideration at their next meeting.

The council received tours of the Berkeley Pit, Montana Resources, Orphan Girl/Orphan Boy Mine and Geothermal Site, and Headframe Spirits Manufacturing.  The tours each provided the members with great history and facts, as well as current conditions and policy concerns. The council and staff would like to thank all of the gracious hosts who provided their time to the council:  Rep. Jim Keane, John Metesh and Montana Tech, Mark Thompson, Mike McGivern, Larry Hoffman, John and Courtney McKee.

The council’s next meeting will be in August, with a final date and location to be determined.  For more information, please visit the council’s website or contact Susan Byorth Fox, council staff.  The meetings are posted on http:// leg.mt.gov.
