Agency Overview

The Montana Department of Corrections is the third largest department in Montana state government, with services touching every community in Big Sky Country. Their commitment is to provide evidence-based programming in all aspects of their work as they move toward their goal of reducing recidivism and disrupting the cycle of incarceration.

Mission Statement: Creating a safer Montana through accountability, rehabilitation, & empowerment.

Vision Statement: To promote and contribute to the success of individuals engaged within the criminal justice system while providing safety and security for victims and Montana communities.

Objectives:

  • Evaluate recidivism within Montana DOC system
  • Reevaluate public safety practices in relation to community supervision
  • Improve communications and collaboration with criminal justice partners
  • Increase transparency through communication to the public
  • Define DOC’s role in Governor Gianforte’s criminal justice policy goals
  • Implement an integrated healthcare model at all secure care facilities
  • Increase offender success through evidence-based practices
  • Invest in our people for their professional development, growth and success
  • Increase housing of medically fragile offenders at Riverside Special Needs Unit in Boulder
